Hope, Help, Heal

I recently took a friend to pickup a donation for a fundraiser she’s organizing.  It was a joy to be a vessel for the ride, the contact, and to see God at work.

Jenny is a neighborhood friend who has a disabled son.  Bradley is 16 years old with a great sense of humor and a quick smile.  He also has Batten’s Disease.  After reaching normal developmental milestones, Bradley’s vision began to deteriorate at age 4.  He was diagnosed with this genetic degenerative neurological disease that causes neurons to die off inside the brain.   Over time, affected children suffer mental impairment, worsening seizures, and progressive loss of sight and motor skills. Presently Batten’s Disease is always fatal.

I admire Jenny.  She definitely fits into my “You Rock Mom” category.

I often see her pushing Bradley in his wheelchair at school, Scout, and community events.  Even with two younger sons, I have never heard Jenny complain about caring for Bradley.  She always has a smile on her face and a pleasant attitude.  And she often makes time to impact her community and church through volunteer work.

When Jenny decided to organize a fundraiser for pediatric neurological disorders called HOPE, HELP HEAL, I knew I wanted to stand behind her with support.  She’s just one of those gals!

She chose the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute that is presently being built and organized in Houston’s Medical Center. Not only will this institute research her son’s Batten’s Disease, it will also research pediatric Down Syndrome, Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Language Disorders, Neurological Malformations, and Genetic Neurological diseases.  In addition, this institute will have labs, resources, and professionals from all over the world,  all in one complex.  It’s an amazing first-of-its kind institute.

Jenny’s Fundraiser Steering Team and many of her friends are also supporting her by obtaining donations for the live and silent auctions at the fundraiser.  I happen to know the generous and community focused owner of The Round Top Collection, who graciously agreed to donate some lovely product.  While we were at Round Top’s warehouse, the woman who was helping us also has a child with a neurological disorder.  Watching Jenny listen the woman pour out her heart and then explain this new research institute was amazing.  I had goosebumps just standing there listening, being a vessel of contact.

As we departed, I mentioned to the helpful woman that we hope the fundraiser will make a difference in her child’s life.  She gave me a node with hope on her face.  And I’ll always remember Jenny offering what her fundraiser is named, HOPE, HELP, HEAL.  It was truly a God thing.

Join us in helping fund research to Heal Sick Children by attending our event.
